momma octopus

Meet my new feature, Momma Octopus! Every week I will feature a mom and let her tell you a bit about herself and her kids. But first I want to tell you about the whole octopus obsession. The octopus really isn't my favorite animal. My favorite animal is a giraffe. It is what I learned about the octopus,  that started this whole thing I have going on. Their reproduction cycle is amazing. First off the father usually dies a couple of months after mating, so momma octopus is already a single mother and she's about to lay around 200,000 eggs. I don't know how she could do it even with eight arms. ;) She lays the eggs in her lair and will not go out to hunt so that she can protect them.  She starves for about a month and may even eat her own limbs just to stay alive long enough for her babies to be born. When they are hatched she will either die of starvation or will be too week to defend herself against predators. If thats not dedication then I really don't know what is!
So a momma octopus is someone who would chew off her own limbs to protect her babies and those are the kind of mothers that I want on my blog!! Plus we all feel like we have or need 8 arms sometimes.
If you are a momma octopus click on the button at the top and see how you can be part of my new feature. Check back next Saturday for the very first momma octopus.
